Disaster-Area Taxpayers Have More Time to File and Pay

Most have until May 1, but residents in fire-ravaged areas of California and in Kentucky are getting even more time.

The Internal Revenue Service is giving taxpayers in disaster areas more time to file and pay their taxes.

The extension is automatic, according to an IRS news release. Taxpayers don’t have to call the agency or file paperwork to get it.

Under the extension, taxpayers in all of Alabama, Florida, Georgia, North Carolina and South Carolina, and in parts of Alaska, New Mexico, Tennessee, Virginia and West Virginia have until May 1 to file and pay.

Disaster-area taxpayers who need more time to file can request an extension to Oct. 15. However, the extension request only gives more time to file. Tax payments are still due by May 1.

Taxpayers must make electronically filed extension requests by April 15. After that and until May 1, they can only make the request on paper. Go here to learn how.

California wildfire victims have longer to file and pay — until Oct. 15. Similarly, taxpayers in Kentucky have until Nov. 3. Extensions are not available beyond these dates.
